Kalamkari Sarees

Kalamkari is a traditional Andhra-style saree with aanchal full of large motifs in ornate scenes, the name for which is originally derived from Persian words Kalam and Kari. Kalam means ‘Pen’ and Kari means ‘Craftsmanship’; so Kalamkari simply means crafting with a pen. In Kalmakari, artisans create hand- printed or block-printed designs on cotton and silk fabric. These ancient designs are inspired from stories of the Ramayana, Mahabharatra and Panchatantra. During ancient times people used to travel from one village to another and share stories. To bring these stories to life, artisans took the help of illustrations, and thus the art of “Kalamkari” was born. Being so intricate and beautiful, Kalamkari is an art form that requires dedication, talent, and a deep, abiding love for threads and paintings both. Offering a wide-ranging collection of gorgeous Kalamkari Sarees online, Red Brick Shop aims to rekindle people’s age-old affair with this fine apparel.

For Kalamkari sarees, artisans use a tamarind pen and natural dyes, with a simple colour palette for 5-10 colours. They follow twenty-three tedious steps of dyeing, bleaching, hand painting, block printing, starching, cleaning and more, to create a masterpiece. Kalamkari sarees are famed for their vibrant mythological and floral designs. Weavers today offer the Kalamkari sarees in an all-over dyed block print (Macchilipatnam-syle) or free hand-drawn (Srikalahasti) print. In the Macchilipatman style there are two broad types, small, busy motifs and big, elaborate ones. Kalamkari sarees available online are sourced from an array of regions across India, and feature distinctively elaborate designs.

Due to the many washes, the sarees are very soft and comfortable. They drape so well that in a very short time, Kalamkari has become one of the best-loved sarees in India, making kalamkari sarees online shopping in India rather popular.
