Kantha Sarees

Kantha is a popular style of embroidery art work that comes from West Bengal and is a favorite amongst designers who love taking fashion to levels beyond the ordinary. Conventionally, this type of art work was practiced by the rural women who perform Kantha embroidery, which is all over running stiches on soft dhotis or sarees. The word Kantha means ‘throat’ and is associated with Lord Shiva.

Kantha is one of the oldest forms of Indian embroidery which was evolved with the thought to reuse old clothes and materials and create something out of it. The needlework done for Kantha is famed for its richness of design and color, which is inspired from day to day lives, and has motifs surrounded around birds, animals, folk scenes, fishes and imagery of the livelihood of the people living in Bengal.

The patterns are painstakingly hand-drawn on cloth and then women, typically rural women, stitch over these patterns using a running stitch to create masterpieces. One can search for videos to see the hard work involved in making kantha sarees online. In olden times, Kantha sarees were made using tussar silk with a base colour of beige. The stitches were with brightly-coloured threads, sometimes as many as 6-8 colours. A fully-worked saree took weeks to make. Today, the silk is dyed in vibrant pinks, greens, reds and yellows to spice up the saree. These coloured shop sold Kantha Sarees and online kantha sarees usually have 1-3 coloured stitches. Though there are simpler versions with border-buti-aanchal, the truly exquisite ones are the all-over worked sarees.

Today, Kantha artwork is done to make sarees of tussar, silk or cotton. These Katha Sarees are loved by women for being available in variations of butis with border or all-over work; they have beautiful, intricate and decorative aanchal that make them ideal to be worn on special occasions.
