Batik

Designs inspired from the beauty of nature, these Batik sarees are available in silk as well as cotton fabric and are famed for their vibrant hues and exotic designs. Prints on intricately crafted batik sarees captivate various shades of modern life and come in a mesmerising blend of colours and patterns. Historically, Batik printing is regarded as the most expressive and subtle method to design a fabric. The designs are geometric, floral or abstract and usually in white over bright coloured fabric. In West Bengal, many rural women and women from charitable organisations are involved in creating beautiful Batik sarees, thus keeping the craft alive.

Batik sarees are a stylish blend of tradition and modernity for these are designed with ancient technique of wax-resistant dyeing and designing with a sculpting tool. Certain areas of a saree are blocked out by brushing or drawing hot wax over them, and the cloth is then dyed. The portions of the cloth covered in wax resist the dye and remain in the original color. This process of waxing and dyeing can be repeated to create more elaborate and colorful designs. After the final dyeing the wax is removed and the Batik print saree is ready for wearing. The skills of batik printing on handloom have been perfected over many centuries by local artisans; because only a skilled artisan can create a stunning artwork with myriad of colors put on the top of each other to form a beautiful design on the saree aanchal, border or pallu.
